About Us

What is Open Source AI Week?

Open Source AI Week is a community-run, decentralized celebration of open-source artificial intelligence — ten days of talks, workshops, hackathons, demo nights, panels and office hours across the San Francisco Bay Area, held together by a single belief: open source AI for everyone.

It is not one conference, and it has no headquarters. It is dozens of independently hosted events on one shared calendar, anchored by the Kickoff Party, the ExecuTorch Hackathon, the Open Source AI Debates and the Open Source AI Awards. Anyone — a startup, a research lab, a meetup, a nonprofit, or a few friends with a projector — can host an event and be part of the week.

The History

Every legend starts small. In 2024, Open Source AI Week was born as a discussion between a group of people in the open source AI community who believed the movement deserved its own moment: Kevin Crosby (GitHub), Rajko Radovanovic (A16Z), Sophia Yang (Mistral), Robin Rombach (Black Forest Labs), Ryan Teknium (Nous Research) and Michael Chiang (Ollama). Six people from six organizations — GitHub, A16Z, Mistral, Black Forest Labs, Nous Research and Ollama — with one idea: take the scattered meetups, launches and hack nights of the Bay Area and forge them into one shared week for everyone building in the open.

The idea caught fire. In 2025 the week exploded into 50 community-run events across the Bay Area, and the circle of organizers grew to match — Ion Stoica (UC Berkeley, Databricks), Joe Spisak (Meta / Reflection), Greg Mackenzie (Web), Jeff Boudier (Hugging Face), Nathan Lambert (AI2) and Lysandre Debut (Hugging Face) joined the founders, bringing UC Berkeley, Databricks, Meta, Hugging Face and AI2 into the fold. What began as a conversation had become a movement.

In 2026 the team grew again — Andy Konwinski (Laude, Databricks, Perplexity), Chip Huyen, Matt White (Open Intelligence Foundation), Daniel Han-Chen (Unsloth), Dima Dzhulgakov (Fireworks AI), Grady Wells (Nous Research), Illia Polosukhin (NEAR), Jason Cui (A16Z), Kay Yoo, Michael Han-Chen (Unsloth), Robert Nishihara (Anyscale), Mingyi Lu (RadixArk), Thomas Wolf (Hugging Face) and Will Brown (Prime Intellect) — adding Laude, Perplexity, the Open Intelligence Foundation, Unsloth, Fireworks AI, NEAR, Anyscale, RadixArk and Prime Intellect to the story.

That same year, Open Source AI Week moved under the Open Intelligence Foundation, a neutral 501(c)(3) non-profit that holds the week’s intellectual property and ensures it remains in the control of the community — so that no one company can ever try to control it. As the week grows in reach and prestige, so does the temptation for a single company to absorb it and steer it toward its own products and its own definition of “open.” The Foundation exists to make sure that never happens: the calendar stays open to every contributor, the stage stays open to competing labs and competing ideas, and decisions stay accountable to the community. Open Source AI Week was founded by the community and is designed for the community.

Last year there were 50 community-run events. This year, we are expecting more than 75.

Who Is Planning Open Source AI Week This Year?

No single organization runs Open Source AI Week — it takes the whole community. The 2026 edition is planned by volunteers and contributors from across the open source AI ecosystem:
